Fiona, you've missed out the . before the productListing-even and productListing-odd, like this :
.productListing-even{margin-top:5px;}
.productListing-odd{margin-top:5px;}
add the full stops in and it'll work fine

That was what Rachel mentioned above and I tried that and it still made no difference - I even put 15px so the space should have been huge and still no difference. I am sure it is something basic and fundamental that I am missing.

it has worked, its just that the margin top isnt moving it anywhere, change it to this
.productListing-even {
height: 160px;
}
.productListing-odd {
height: 160px;
}
that will give you a space between the rows

Really good tips there for any newbies, so well done for writing this post!
My contribution to this is before you even start customising your zencart skin/template, ensure you have a very good quality logo, as your logo is what everyone will see first, so if it is shoddy or looks very unprofessional many people will simply hit the back button, meaning all your hard work customising your cart has been wasted because, well no one stayed on your site long enough to see it!
