Well, dpends if you can the URL. If you change the url then it will just go to a page not found.

Or am I getting completely the wrong end of the stick?

or as I think it will cause all my shop links to ago well amiss for a while until they can catch up with my new links ..or it can double the links to my website although half will be not founds while the other half will work ..arrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggg some one put my mind at rest lol

lol ... nope .... I want to add your stuff when it comes available and then sort jewellery into 1 category pewter into another and so on .
but if it will cause me to completely loose all my item links I will just add another category and just change the positions of everything
I can then sort out the pictures at my leisure

you can set up redirects in cpanel,

click the redirects in the domain section in cpanel (see attached pic) add in your old link url, under that add in your new url, (where you'v moved the product or category to) and click add. once done, any one reaching your site through an old link will be redirected to the product their looking for.  You'd need to do it one link at a time though, so if you have a fair few links about, it might take a while  lol

my answer as to the best way to deal with it would depend on traffic and sales and the amount of links you have out there ;)

I completely agree with this if you have alot of links and people ordering then you need to change alot of links.

Well you can use the black art of .htaccess & mod_redirect - depending on the conditions it may be simpler than creating a redirect for each item, apache re-directs really are a black art and require hair of a virgin newt along with a hens tooth to make it work properly but it can be done

Hi,
If you have added product links manually then it will seem to be appear broken
of it is dynamic then you can recover it by backing up your database

if you are only wanting to move items and change pictures you should be able to move them around the file structure from admin without causing too much grief .. are you using a "pretty url" mod of any description  ?

changing pictures isnt an issue as changing them via admin will put them in the right place on the server, just make sure you click thebox to delete the old picture used from the server and it will tidy itself up ;)
