What are you calling large and bulky and where are you likely to be sending ?

Is it a one off ? is it going to be large box or pallet ? sorry can't help till you tell us more or send us money, can't see you doing the later one so please give us more info instead  lol

Nearly forgot about this one, a friend of mine used this site last year to get some PA equipment sent to him from Spain.

http://www.uship.com/uk/ You just put in what you want moving and you will get quotes from carriers as to how much it will be.

A sofa is an a horrible size, it won't fit on a pallet but doesn't need a van on its own, can you not find a courier selling their services on ebay ?

Other option i can suggest is http://www.courierexchange.co.uk/ and offer it as a backload, instead of a courier driving the van back empty when they have taken a delivered they pick up backloads to cover some of the diesel.

Ring a few couriers around the area the sofa will end up and ask them if they are looking for backloads from the pick up area.
