you seem to be forgetting that facebook is full of niche communities ..... it  just takes time to build relationships with them

Nope, I'm doing that too.

But I've seen nowhere near the level of response from existing sites and networks as I do from the niche site.
Lets not forget that this niche site also allows me to place links pretty much wherever I like too = good for SEO.

I suppose it also depends on the nature of the business. It's not so easy for me to just go into a network like FB or Twitter and befriend people and groups.
