you seem to be forgetting that facebook is full of niche communities ..... it  just takes time to build relationships with them ;)

Nope, I'm doing that too.

But I've seen nowhere near the level of response from existing sites and networks as I do from the niche site.
Lets not forget that this niche site also allows me to place links pretty much wherever I like too = good for SEO.

I suppose it also depends on the nature of the business. It's not so easy for me to just go into a network like FB or Twitter and befriend people and groups.
