Some possibles:

i) read the manual that came with the webbook about how to restore to last known configuration.

ii) can you restore the machine to its original factory settings? - back up any data first.

iii) is it still under warranty?

Windows wont start because the file is missing or currupt...i was restoring the webbook and it froze.

As i understand it, there is a file in the bios with a copy of registry and all...its just beyond me.

As for the warranty, my boys Mum, who works for Trading Standards, says that by me trying to restore it shows there was an issue with it beforehand, and that she knows how they try to get out of it.

While there may not be a disk there may be a restore partition on the drive - check that out first
If this is a new machine i cant see the problem re trading standards as the goods are faulty and not fit for the purpose - plus you will find most vendors will try to assist as long as you dont but their nose out of joint

Yeah has scotserve says there will be a partition. A system reset will likely be best. I think for compaq it's F6 on boot up to get into the settings.

With Dell it's ctrl+F11. HP it's F11. They are all a bit different. I think yours is F6 though. Try that first.

Actually it might be F11 if it's the same as HP compaq mini 102. Here's from the manual:

Recovering using the partition on the hard drive (select models only)
On some models, you can perform a recovery from the partition on the hard drive, which is accessed
by pressing either the Start button or f11. This restores the computer to its factory condition.
NOTE: Computers with an SSD may not have a recovery partition. If the computer does not have a
recovery partition, you will not be able to recover using this procedure. Recovery discs have been
included for computers that do not have a partition. Use these discs to recover your operating system
and software.
To restore the system from the partition, follow these steps:
1. Access Recovery Manager in either of the following ways:
Select Start>All Programs>Recovery Manager>Recovery Manager.
– or –
a. Turn on or restart the computer.
b. Press f11 while the “Press f11 for recovery message is displayed on the screen.
NOTE: It may take several minutes for Recovery Manager to load.
2. In the Recovery Manager window, select System Recovery.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Hello :)

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing
or currupt:
<Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file."

Now...i presssed F6...and it says windows is loading files, windows loads at bottom of screen, screen goes grey, this takes me to Roxio BackOnTrack, it tells me Windows has not been loaded...pressed Restore, it asks me which date, 2 dates plus the HP inital restore point...the HP one returns me to the above again...the 2 dates go through the restore process...and yay one worked!

Thanks Guys :) one button!

So...to my next question....

Is that it sorted now?

and,

The oldest forum question in the world!!

What you do use for Anti-virus software? Ive used AVG on all systems...both seem to be failing and AVG doesnt seem to be helping,

Thanks x

AVG often finds ntoskrnl as a false positive virus and removes it. Hence you get the problem you've had.

:) Byron! that graph certainly shows a difference between eset and avg doesnt it.

So...more silly questions...will it detect something that is already there aswell as potential future threats?

Thanks :D

Best antivirus for Netbooks
Netbooks and Nettops pose unique security risks, especially if you use them for online shopping and banking. Running an effective and proactive antivirus is critical to keeping your identity and data safe from hackers and thieves.

In addition to their unique security risks, netbooks are by nature comparatively slow with limited power capacity – the light footprint of ESET products ensures protection without compromising speed.

ESET products use proprietary advanced heuristics to anticipate the behavior of malicious software to help protect you from undiscovered and emerging viruses (zero day attacks). ESET NOD32 is consistently recognized as one of the most effective antivirus products available today. In independent tests conducted by Virus Bulletin, ESET NOD32 has never missed a known In-the-Wild virus.

"If you've been looking for antivirus protection for your gaming rig or a slower machine, ESET NOD32 should be your top choice."

– CPU Magazine

Bryon told me about ESET awhile ago and I've been using it ever since. It is top quality.
