Did you make a boot disc when you got the computer?

If not, don't quote me on this, hopefully someone else with real knowledge will say whether I'm blowing bubbles or not but I seem to recall you can use your original installation discs to run a repair.

Can you live without the information that was on there?
If so, you should be able to do a system restore on boot up
Usually means pressing a F key as it starts up, but which one will depend on your system

All depending what operating system you are using it would be quite easy to repair.

Most operating systems you can download from torrent sites (make sure it is not a cracked copy) or drop me an e-mail with your operating system and address and i will pop you a copy in the post.

If you also drop me anothr e-mail i will give you instructions on how to repair.

Mike,

Put your Windows XP disc in and restart the computer. You should then get some options to install Windows, Repair Windows etc. You want to try Repair Windows then follow the instructions on screen.

Let us know how that goes.

The only other option then seems to be to reinstall Windows from scratch but that will wipe out all your data. Unless anyone else has any brain waves.

What you need to do is put the xp pro disc in (if your PC has xp pro on it) If it has xp home then you need an xp home disc.

Start your computer and put the xp disc in the disc drive.

Press f8,f9,f10,f11,f12 as one of these will give you a boot menu.

When the boot menu appears it will ask you to select a device to boot from. Choose the DVD drive with the xp disc in.

It will then ask you to press any key to boot from disc (press any key)

The screen will go blue and it will start to load files.

Once the files have loaded another menu will appear asking if you wish to repair or install windows. Select install windows

Now it will ask you to press f8 to accept the T&C's press f8 and it will start to search for previous operating systems.

It "should" show that it has windows xp installed now you need to press "R" for repair. The software will now repair your PC all you need to do is follow the onscreen instructions.

If it dose not show your xp installation after pressing F8 to agree to the T&C's make sure that the disc is definitely the same as the operating system installed. If you look for the COA sticker on your PC it will say windows xp home or xp pro.

If it is the right disc and it is not showing an operating system to repair then you need to reboot the PC and boot from disc again.

When you boot from the disc you will get the blue screen again and the files loading. At the first screen you need to press "r" for repair.

A black screen will load and it will list the operating systems installed and ask you to select one. Normally you press number one and press enter. If it asks for an administrators password press enter and it will drop down to a little flashing line

Type chkdsk /r (there is a space between k /r) and press enter.

This will take around 1 hour to run once it has finished type exit and the system will reboot.

Let windows load and see if you get back to your desktop if it dose not then try the first step again as it should recognise your windows operating system now.
