I'm sorry if this is int he wrong section I couldn't see any where else to put it. I downloaded ModX for a personal site and haven't had time to do anything further just yet.

Has anyone used this programme and if so what did they think?

I was looking for something fairly simple that I could grow with as the site grew.

I've tried Mambo and Joomla and I hated them both, really awkward to use, I'd tried smaller lighter CMSs and found their security woeful, support lacking or dead boards. Drupal and Xoops just have too much on them and while they are OK, like most of the longer term OS programmes, there's too much on them as standard and not enough of what I personally need.

I looked for a small framework with add ons I would or might use later on and ModX seemed to have it, it just looks naff with the standard skin.

most do look quite pants with the standard skins, easy to sort though

I'v heard people rate drupal, I dont think its that good to be honest

I might have to have a play with ModX, just to see what its like to work with

It's actually easier than Wordpress and doesn't look like a kiddie did it. Wordpress is OK but I didn't want a blog or a blog style.

I was quite surprised at how simple it was to do anything

I thought that when i first visited Wordpress but it is unbelievably flexible
Here is one of my clients sites http://mkjphotography.co.uk - dont look much like a blog to me

Drupal, joomla etc have all outgrown the basic usability they once had IMO - they are now far more technical orientated and require a degree of knowledge that many users looking for a basic CMS system will not have
The problem about using non-mainstream scripts is how long will they be around, what is support like, how flexible is it and most importantly are the developers security conscious

You're right it doesn't look like a blog there.

I just wonder how many people go with things like Wordpress and Joomla and modify them because they're popular rather than finding something suitable for their needs.

ahhh new things to try playing with ....... i daresay i know what  im going to be looking at later,

with regards to wordpress, it is unbelievably flexible this one www.perfectstormmodels.co.uk is a wordpress site too bout 3/4 finished so far ...... i hunted around for something that could run this other than wordpress and give me the functionality as standard that i could add with wp ... ie the social network sectionon that site and the potential for a forum at a later date and couldnt find anything really that the end user would be able to handle themselves in the future. ... but will definately be looking at ModX to see what it can do ;)

You will never be able to find something 100% suitable IMO, I was like you and took the opinion that WP was a "Blog" but it has went way past that stage and although it is an excellent blog that is only one use for it - my own site is being developed around WP - the reason; is it is so adaptable and ease of maintenance, the functionality allows me to quite easily seemlessly tie it into my registration and billing software. There are also a huge range of templates ok lets rephrase that there is an enormously huge range of templates with a mind blowing variations on the layout styles - for free or little cost.

I have been working on 5 WP sites in the past few months and not one single one is a Blog - in fact one is an e-commerce store with only a few products

Don't get me wrong, I'm not the type of person to take someone elses opinion as mine own or take things on face value and then slag it off, I actually gave it a shot for 6 months. I've tried 8 programmes before this ModX not one of them was in anyway suitable.

I'm not skillful enough to take WP out of looking like a blog and as it's a non-commercial site I've no intention of paying out for modification.

Thats fair comment - I am always a bit nervous of new scripted applications as i have seen many that come and go over time especially in the opensource market - some were total security nightmares - I need to have a look at this one when i have time

Then you probably not looked well enough there a "zillions" ( ok I exaggerate ) of templates out there and a great many are not blogs or with the removal of a couple of boxes make a great stock site - I have paid out for a couple of excellent templates but the average cost is around £10, the amount of time alone saved is worth it.

However as seamus says we are all different and if you have found something that suits - great

Thanks, unfortunately that's not my work, the template was bought as the old one was looking weary, I put in my own graphics, buttons and altered the layouts for products and checkout process. It took months and it's still not near finished cry

I didn't find any for £10 so you're right I didn't look extensively, £10 I would happily fork out although whether it would have just made me stick WP longer before giving up is another thing  ;)
