I'm playing about on google adwords
and typed in personalised handmade cards for all occasions
competition and global monthly searches all have a dash under them so I'm assuming that means zero
is this a good keyword or not to use ??
if no one has searched for that exact phrase would google pick up on just part of it
ie handmade cards or handmade cards for all occasions ??

You can use a key phrase and google will pick up your site if people search for part of that key phrase,
Google AdWords is a good tool for sorting out your keywords and phrases ;)

you need to aim your keywords and phrases at searches people are actually typing , the lack of a result would mean that that search term "personalised handmade cards for all occasions"  most likely doesnt get typed into google very often ......  ;o) , handmade boys cards might though , as might handmade for girls , or weddings or invitations etc .... get a little more creative with your wording , and remember to ask your friends , family , and people in the street what they would search for  ... i bet that phrase doesnt come up once  ;o) ..... it will however pick up results for handmade cards ......

SEO is not an exact science , and researching your keywords is the "key" to making sure you hit terms people are using :o) just make sure your content is as relevant as it can be and reads well (google isnt stupid and can spot random tect full of links from a mile off  ;o) #

I would recommend to use several "best" keywords on your site, as far as I can see according to Google Adwords they are - handmade cards, personalised handmade cards, home made cards, handmade cards for all occasions, handmade card shop, hand made greeting cards, hand made birthday cards and some others. Optimize your website pages using some of these key phrases in page content and type keywords in meta tags <meta name="keywords" content="handmade cards, personalised handmade cards, home made cards, etc">
<meta name="description" content="We offer personalised handmade cards for all occasions such as hand made greeting cards, hand made birthday cards, bla, bla, bla. Our hand made card shop is open 24/7."> something like that :)

You sure can type "personalised handmade cards for all occasions" as your keyword phrase but use popular shorter versions along with it, such as  handmade cards, personalised handmade cards, handmade cards for all occasions.

Hi

A good practice to start with is to target  the low hanging fruit first.

i.e: 'handmade cards mothers day' - "homemade mothers day card'

Google does give you statistics on competition for keywords and search volume.  High search volume = High competition = High ad price per click.

You can throw money at it if you want!

But over time if you rank well for the longer tail keywords, you will in time find it easier with a bit of work to rank high for the high volume words. But as always it takes time.
