please bear in mind that I am a complete newbie and struggling to set up my website
but I would really like one of those long rectangular headers that other people seem to have on their site, how do you go about making one or does someone have to make one for you and then how do I get it to fit on my site ??

You can make a banner using any paint programme there are a few decent free ones available ...

gimp is one of them , decide your size create a new image and paint away .....

when it comes to getting it on your site you may be slightly limited by the template you are using but most will tell you what size to upload ,

You can get someone to make one and there are services out there that will do them for pennies , bear in mind that you need to steer clear of using other peoples artwork and images , copyright breach can cause trouble ;o)

Tracey - your current template does not really lend well to having a header banner its not really the template for that type of look

you can alter that template to take a full width header banner, but then there will be knock on effects which will need balancing out to make sure the template still looks right. It can be done easily but there will be more work to do than just uploading a new header image.

there will most likely be an ideal size for your image dictated by your current template , so it should resize your image to fit
