Probably a daft question but how can you tell if someone is hotllnking your images?

Your best bet is the server logs, you can then filter it down to images and look at the referrers...

The other thing you can do is that if you have not given permission to use images then switch hotlinking on - then if they were they aint anymore :p

Thanks for that ... didn't realise there was an option in my CPanel .. have now enabled protection  :D

hmmmm .. that wasn't that simple .. I enabled it but then got a 500 internal server error when trying to get access to my site and admin  huh

It isnt just as simple as that, ask Pcbob i think he tried it and ran into some problems with it.

Any sites that use your images on their site, or grab your your images using a url will have problems.  I am talking about about sites like shopmania, shopwiki, googlebase.

Also if you have an ssl, the areas that use the certificate might not show images correctly.

You need to add domains to the list of allowed referers, this will let these domains use your images.
