When anyone starts out in business it is only natural to choose products that appeal to you and that you would buy for yourself or for someone else. This is our only preference coming through however don't neglect items that really sell, they might not appeal to you, some of the things I have sold in the past are items I would never buy. But the thing is if it sells and you can make money from it then don't close the door on yourself.

Sometimes it is the things we don't expect to sell that are the best selling lines, and these often but in not all cases draw customers to your site and your other products and you can benifit from add on sales. For example they come to your site for one thing but leave with two different items. Very often I speak to people who are only interested in one brand or one particular line to stock, what they don't realise is that they are potentially cutting their own nose off and are missing out on really fast selling products. You might not like a brand but if it sell ten items a week for you, isn't it better then your preference that doesn't sell even a quarter of that?

You should treat your business as a business and not like your own personal hobby horse, many business that fail do so for a number of reasons wrong pricing, poor stock control, huge overheads, and more importantly by not offering stock that sells. You might have a site that is ranked first on the search engines but is that any good if the items you are selling only appeal to you?

Most suppliers when asked will be able to tell you what are their top selling brands and what sells best from each brand, that can be used as a good starting point in choosing the lines you are going to carry.

nice post !!

I'm a great believer in selling items you have an interest in it helps when marketing your store :)

Suppliers can be a great help when deciding on which lines to stock and the best do  advise on best sellers and specials, although you would be surprised at how many are very 'heres the stock off you trot' in their approach

Fantastic post! I just wanna share my personal experience. I remember when I was just starting out with my ecommerce site.  a few months ago, i was having a hard time choosing the best products to sell online. I kept on surfing online to see what people are interested in, without even asking myself "what am i really interest in?". When i have finally decided on the product that i wanna sell, things got clearer.

On the other hand, i also agree that "you should treat your business as a business and not like your own personal hobby horse".. there are a lot of things to consider in starting an online store. For those planning to start an online shop, this page may just help you identify the important things you should consider: http://storeberries.com/blog/2010/09/17/questions-to-answer-in-setting-up-an-online-store/
