Do directory submissions do anything now though? I added my site to many when I started and gained traffic from one. Google didn't see any for linkage. In fact, many now believe that Google doesn't rate them for anything.

I guess it doesn't harm, but directories are widely viewed as a pointless exercise unless you manage to find one that actually sends you traffic.

Directory submission is help full to increase the website traffic and to get quality back link for you websites, mostly business directories is use full to get god website traffics.

On a serious note directory submissions are better if relevant to your site and/or they have a fair amount of traffic, but in my opinion time would be better spent giving people a genuine reason to link back to your site through articles or handy gadgets, one that i worked on over a year ago now was aimed at people trying to get pregnant and included a javascript pregnancy and ovulation counter .... :o) , it got an amazing amount of traffic for that term as you didnt need to download anything to use it  and a fair few conversions into the bargain :o)
