Anyone know what is causing this. The main category page should open with images and links to subcategories but this is not happening, no images and no links just a category description and a New For October box.

It worked this morning, I made some changes to the template but once I saw the problem I replaced all the changed files with the back up files I made this morning.

I have checked with the admin and these are set as I've written below:

Configuration -> Layout Settings -> Categories - Always Open to Show SubCategories      1
Configuration -> Product Listing -> Show SubCategories on Main Page while navigating     1

Can anyone point me in the right direction to gain the subcategories back please?

This is not a problem with the site in my signature, it's a different site.

Thanks for replying Seamus but I've *resolved* it. (bodged.  whistle )

I removed the tpl_categories_index.php override file, I don't know why that was having such an effect because it wasn't a file I'd touched and even though I'd overwritten it with a spare virgin file I keep as back up, it still didn't work. Weirdly I looked over all the changes I'd made and nothing related to categories, no punctuation missing or anything daft that's easily removed but not easily seen.  huh

Removing the file has not changed anything as far as I can see, other than making it work properly, and there appears to be some code missing from the override that is on the templates default version. But just as long as it works ... great

ahh, it could've been the missing code causing problems, or it could've been just a simple syntax error in a block of code before the main categorys bit. If there is a syntax error (single quote mark missing, or a semi colon missing) the code that comes after that will break.

Chances are the code for the categories bit was fine, it was the code that gets loaded before that, that would've had a tiny error in it ;)

If there is a semi colon missing from the end of a line of code, then that line of code will end up being joined to the next line of code, because there is no stop function (the semi colon is the signal to stop that line of code and start a new line) so the two lines of code end up being mashed together, inturn breaking the code.

Its always a tiny syntax error that tends to break things in a big way lol

But I've restored all the files from the backup which was working this morning so there shouldn't be any code problems or syntax errors since there are essentially no changes. I've checked the files against the original files, I keep the originals because I've a tendency to fiddle about and break stuff, and nothing different.

 huh
