Subfolder Sites and SEO

Are there any SEO benefits for using a subfolder for your main site content? Or is it now a no no?

Also if you move a site from a subfolder to the main domain presumably all the pages must have 301 directs in the root .htaccess. Would this in any way affect a sites ranking?

The redirects would be an issue on moving a site in that way , though how much of an issue would really depend on current rankings , traffic and age ...... on a relatively new and unproven site it probably wouldnt make a big enough difference to stop me moving it personally , as far as content goes a subfolder site will still form part of the main site ...... as long as that content is readily available under a decent navigation structure  (so that people and google more inportantly for this question) can still read it then you should gain from it , although deep linking from main page content using decent anchor text will boot google in the right direction if you are in doubt as to wether its being crawled
