2 Carts one site
«
on:
March 09, 2010, 11:27:32 PM »
A question for the experts.
If I have oscommerce installed on my main site, would a zencart installation on a sub domain effect it in any way?
Thanks in advance

no it wouldnt affect it at all,
both carts would be using seperate sql databases, so they wouldnt cause any conflicts at all with each other,

That depends seamus on how the sub domain is set up - if the subdomain is setup on Cpanel then the subdomain uses a subdirectory off the main domain - this means that the search engines can pick this up a directory of the main site. Of course you can limit this with a robots file but not all bots are robots.txt compliant.

Thanks both,
Being a little more clearer than I was last night, what I meant was will it effect the carts ability to function correctly? or will it cause problems with the other carts files, also bearing in mind that this is a custom install of os if that has any bearing.
Thanks

well what scottie is saying is right enough, but if its just the functionality of the carts your worrying about, then as I said, the two carts would work fine on the same site,
are ye just setting up two seperate carts to test them out?

I was seamus,
Was really getting along nicely with zen compared to my custom oscommerce, then my site went down to which I was told the reason was I had been altering files. Now knowing I had not worked on the site for at least a few days I new that was not the reason then I was informed that because I installed a zen to an oscommerce site that was the problem and had to re-install the site from scratch.
So I start again.

as long as the two carts use seperate mySQL databases and dont try to share the same one, there should be no problems running different cart systems on the one site,
I'v done the same thing before, using one site to test different cart and blog systems,
at one point I had four carts and a blog on one site, all using their own SQL databases and all functioning fine, without any conflicts,

I currently have on my site
5 zen stores 1 presta and 4 blogs all running on subdomains each with their own database I'm not encountering any issues between them all.
I dont see how one can interfere with the other, im not the most technologically sound mind but I'm interested now as to how the problem could have been caused that way if indeed it was.

I had a wordpress blog in a sub domain, a zencart site in a subdomain and in extensions had a phpbb forum, a presta site and another oscommerce but yes the zen site had caused the error.
And yes seamus they all had their own sql db.
I have searched hard and can not find anything on the subject to confirm this explenation.
Never mind, this has helped me a great deal in my decision making for the future.

Totally agree with seamus
As long as the cart files were in separate directories then there should be no issue
The only way i could think of a problem would be where say for example you have the os cart on the root and you had a sub directory called /cart and you then went and installed zen in a subdirectory called /cart then you would overwrite some of the OS files
have things structure thus
/
/zen/
/blog/
/forum/
etc then there should be no issue but ideally you should have a mult-idomain account and avoid the sub domains all together where you can install your separate carts above web root so there is no interference from any other site

My structure was domain.com (main site)
blog.subdomain.com (wordpress)
subdomain.domain.com (zencart with a targeted keyword as name)
domain.com/nrm (extension)
domain.com/FoRuM (extension)
Over the last 8 months I have had many of these but they have all had the names relating to what they were.
I used dsl as they were known to have a great back office & templates but I was always using my space as I testing ground.
This is an example of what happened:
Site up as normal Thu 4th at around 10pm no changes made for at least 5 days, worked on sub domain for all of Thu evening happened to check site early hours and site down.
Explanation I have altered files, replied saying I have not and asked what has happened, discussions in between via ticket and pm, another explanation given is must be because I have zen installed on an oscommerce site.
Without what was said in between, what do you think?
Darryl
I only spelt explenation wrong not bad oh no I done it again.

Like a lot of their other posts, note the signature and wonder why ............
Maybe the free reign on signatures was a bad idea ?
