What are QR codes? What are they used for? Do I need one? Where do I get one?

Have seen several today whilst window shopping businesses on FB today

Aha! I had an email today going on about these... it's those funny looking black & white squares that you can point your smartphone at... then I presume it does something, like takes you to the website. My phone is a brick, so if I point it at anything, all that happens is the signal strength wobbles  :D
