I think it is an SSL certificate - let me know how you get on as I would like to incorporate this into my site too.

regardless of what payment system you use, an ssl isnt expensive and is a rather handy thing for a retail store to have, it means guarranteed security for your customers ;)

(and its not expensive at all)

I have actually had customers refuse to use paypal.  huh Luckily they were in this country so I accepted a cheque off them for their order.
I would like to know about this might as well use it for website too while I got it as I will be paying a monthlty fee anyways.

I was going to be paying 2 monthly fees and all the fees for transactions.  One monthly fee for the shop machine and another for the website  facility.  This was going to work out far too expensive.  I do however have the facility with my shop machine to accept payments without the card so can accept payments over the phone if anyone wouldnt use paypal.  The only problem with that is that the card machine company wont take responsibility if the payment is rejected if the card isnt present.

Everything is worth looking into though!!  :)

You will also find you need a internet merchant account this is not the same as having a card machine in the shop - the hoops you would have to jump through to get your site compliant would make it prohibitive, most small online shops should look at using some sort of accredited provider , there is one advertising on here just now - totalwebsolutions, or use Paypal pro or sage pay all of which will provide you with a secure online system that can allow you a virtual terminal, as well as the ability to take payments directly from your website.

SSL certificates - I supply mostly 2 types
Thawte - industry leader with the best browser recognition - special offer just now 1 year £35 or 2 years £60
Rapid SSL - cheap and chearful - wont work with mobile devices - £15 for 1 year and £25 for 2 years
Above prices include dedicated IP address ( required for SSL ) and full installation

As seamus says SSL is much more about providing the feel good factor in these days of identity theft - it shows you are taking care of your customers data and differentiates you for a very modest fee.
