I have noticed a lot of sites have a list of key words across the bottom of the home page.

Wondering if this helps with seo or is it a waiste of time. Personally im not keen on the idea as it looks untidy.

it can be useful but theres other ways to get keywords onto your pages rather than basically spamming your own page footer

I think it looks untidy aswell to be honest

Yes id rather write a short introduction and include key words  , looks so much more proffesional and is more informative about what you do.

It also may marke you down for keyword stuffing, I have seen many where the keywords are totally irrelavent to the site as a whole and on every page to me it is people listening to bad advice

Some times it look should be targeting their inner webpages from bottom links through various keywords....

you would be better to write a decent piece of text providing links to inner pages covering keywords and target phrases , if you also include category descriptions (your software should allow for this ) you can get more text in without links which will make the site more "relevant" to the searches you are aiming for , make the text well written and readable, dont fill it full of links as google reads like a human and can recognise keyword stuffing (spamming) from a mile off , you could also write an about me page for the site which you can include locations in as another hint to google, and if you havent already , get your business registered with google maps ,

Steve you should really be attending the wednesday workshops  ;)
